How To Be Confident At The Gym…

I’ve been meaning to write this post for the longest time now because I know a lot of us struggle with how to be confident at the gym. If you’ve known me for the past couple years, you know that I love a good at-home workout. However when I moved to Rhode Island, I decided to switch things up by going to the gym instead of doing my regular at-home workouts.  It was a way for me to meet new people since I was fairly new in the city. I loved every single moment of it. I joined classes where I was able to socialize with people (until the pandemic happened); Which motivated me to stay active. However, one thing that I could never do is workout in the weight machine area. I literally would do everything but utilize those machines. Why, you ask?

The truth is that I felt insecure because I hadn’t lift since freshman year of college. I could not remember how to be confident at the gym like I used to. I would ask myself “What if I’m not using the correct form when lifting? What if I don’t remember how to do this and that with a particular machine? What if people look and laugh at me?” Yes, love! I’ve been there too and it’s called being human… So today I’m sharing with you some tips and tricks on how to feel and be confident at the gym because you can do it.

Your outfits

My first tip on how to be confident at the gym is to wear clothes that you feel good and comfy in. I believe that if you are wearing something that you feel really comfortable and good in, you’re going to have a bomb workout! That’s usually the case for me! I always feel more ready for my workouts when my outfits are on point compared to when I just throw any pieces together last minute. One tip is to choose your outfits the night before. It saves time in the morning and it helps you to actually go for it. Also, some of my favorite places to shop activewear are Fabletics, Gymshark and Burlington!

Go first thing in the morning.

Now you might be thinking ” this is not going to work for me, I’m not a morning person”. Well, if you want results, you better become one. Find at what time your gym opens, then go there first thing in the morning. Usually there is less people at the gym early in the morning. Therefore, it’s usually the best time to go in to try different machines without feeling that all eyes are on you. If mornings definitely cannot work for you because of work or other responsibilities, I suggest to go at night time. However, it will be a different vibe as there are more people in the evening.

Bring a friend

Find yourself a workout partner. Although this is harder said than done, especially right now with the pandemic. Chances are that you have a friend who wants to go to the gym as well, but like you, does not feel confident enough to go by themselves. Find that friend and go together. I used to have a workout partner and we will always have so much fun together. We encourage and motivate each other without even realizing it! You might even meet someone new at the gym and become workout besties!

Ask for help

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! One thing that I learned while going to the gym is that most people will gladly help you if you ask for it. If you don’t know how a machine works, chances are the people next to you will know how it works and they’ll definitely teach you. It can be very intimidating but remember that everyone have to start somewhere.

Join a class

A lot of the fitness classes have been cancelled due to the pandemic. However, they are slowly bringing them back. Most gyms have a variety of classes such as Zumba, Pilates, yoga, boot camp conditioning and cycle to list just a few. My favorite classes are boot camp and Zumba! You’ll find several people, who like you might not feel confident in a whole gym setting but enjoy the classes because they’re usually in a separate room. Find a class that you like or that you would like to try and go for it!

Have fun

My last tip for how to be confident at the gym is to have fun! Do not overthink it! All the negative voices that you keep hearing in your head are normal because you are human. Do not attribute your workouts to loosing weight or anything similar. Just do it because it benefits your body and affects your mood in such a positive way. Working out can be hard but it can definitely be fun as well! It all depends on what you make of it! Do your best to think positive although that’s not easy and HAVE FUN!

All these tips have helped me to be confident at the gym! I stayed consistent and this also helped me to feel more comfortable. When you stay consistent, you become more familiar with the machines and you can even build a routine which will help you be confident.
