Don’t you sometimes wonder how to eat healthy on a budget? Food in general can be expensive, especially when food prices keep increasing daily, making ends meet can be hard. Therefore, I am sharing with you a few tips on how to eat on a budget while still getting your nutrient in.
Buy Frozen Produce
There is a misconception that frozen produces are not healthy or that they are not as good as fresh produces. However this is so far from the truth. Frozen produces such as fruits and veggies have a lot of nutrients, they are healthy, they can last longer and they are very cost effective. The only downside to frozen produces is that you can’t use them in certain dishes. However, other than that you can use them in a lot of dishes. I love to buy frozen fruits for my smoothies and frozen veggies to use as a side dish or in some meals.
Buy Canned Produce
Another misconception is that canned produce is not “good”. Canned produces can be tricky to use because some of them contain a lot of added salt and sugar. However, there are other canned produces with no salt or sugar added which are great. That’s why it is very important to always check the food labels. The CDC recommends using canned produces that come in water instead of the ones that come in syrup as they contain more added salt and added sugar. Similarly to frozen produces, canned produces last longer and are cost effective. They can also be used in several dishes.
Try More Plant Proteins
People often think that protein can only be found in animal produces when there are several plant sources of protein such as quinoa, chickpeas, tempeh, tofu, lentils and several others. Plant based proteins are less expensive than animal based protein. They are also nutrient dense meaning that they are full of antioxidant, minerals and vitamins.
Buy Local and seasonal produce
I love buying local produces especially during the summertime when they have a lot of seasonal produce. Local produces are usually very affordable, You can always check to see if there is any farmers market near you where you would be able to buy a lot of fresh produces such as fruits, vegetables, eggs and milk.
Use coupons
Usually, it is thought that coupons are only meant to be used by low-income individuals. However, coupons are for everybody who wants to use them. Coupons are a great way to stay within budget while trying to eat healthy. There are several coupons available online, in the papers and even at your local grocery store.
Plan, Purchase, Prepare
My last tip on how to eat healthy on a budget is to plan, purchase and prepare. It is important to plan your meals and your grocery lists because this makes it easier to navigate the grocery store and pick up only the items that are on your list. Once you have all items that are on your list, you are able to prepare your meals and go through the week without worrying about your meals.
