Diet Culture- What is it?

Diet Culture is anything that tells you that you should look a certain way to fit into society’s beauty standard. It encourages you to cut a certain group of food into your diet (what you eat) because it will make you fat; ie: carbs. Diet Culture makes one believe that she/he should be thin in order to be healthy. It is also what brings the notion of “Good” Vs “Bad” food.

We’ve all taken part of diet culture before. We don’t even realize that we are part of it because it is everywhere in our society. One does not need to be on a diet in order to be part of diet culture. It can be as simple as eating gluten free foods, when you don’t have any gluten sensitivity or celiac disease, just because everyone is doing.

Diet culture can show in our obsession with our weight and with the scale. Weighing yourself every day just to be stressed about a couple extra pounds is a great example of how diet culture can affect us. This can cause us to fear eating foods. In other words, we’ll be stuck with the idea that eating is the cause of the extra pounds. When it can be because of a lot of different reasons, such as water weight and not getting enough of sleep.

You might be wondering how something that is so bad for our mental, emotional and physical health be all around us. The answer is simple, money. The diet industry is worth billions of dollars. Hence, a lot of people are selling skinny teas and promoting the idea that skinny is equal to healthy. As long as diet culture is around, the diet industry will keep thriving.
