New year, new me, new diet? It’s around this time of the year where the diet companies are working harder than the devil. With everyone researching diets and ways to lose weight, the diet industry is getting creative with their next top weight loss thang. Ever wonder why people always start their diets in January? Keep reading to find out!
New Year!
January is the detox month of the other holiday months (October, November and December)! Wait, I might actually be onto something here! We eat whatever we want for the last 3 months of the year, then we, actually society decides that we somehow need to detox our bodies because of everything that we ate. Did you know that our bodies have a natural detoxification system? Yup! You read that right! The body has organs that their main goals are to clear toxins out of the boy, in other words, to detox the body. This detox talk will have a whole post of its own…
New Me!
Apart from January being the detox month, it is also the start of a new year. It’s usually the time to set new visions, new goals for yourself, new year’s resolutions. You think that it’s going to be your best year, therefore, you want to “look your best”; you want change, hence the saying “New year, new me”. Diet companies take this opportunity to target you and to sell you their products. Hence, you will see a lot of ads for several fad diets such as keto, intermittent fasting. There will also be plenty of ads for diet pills, diet gummies/lollipops, skinny tea etc. So please, beware of all of those ads and save your money.
New diet?
There are certainly going to be a few new FAD diets this year! What will they be? I don’t know! However, I do know that they are going to be the same nonsense. They will promise you very fast weight loss that comes with a bunch of food restrictions. Most of them will be harmful to the body, unhealthy and unsafe. Always remember that there are safer ways to lose/gain weight if that’s what you truly desire (Lucifer, anyone?)!
I am not going to pretend that I’ve never tried any diets, because like I have mentioned in past blog post, I have had my share of diets. I have tried intermittent fasting, low carbs, no carbs, fasting and low fat diets, just to mention a few. Clearly, I did not know any better at this time. However, after being a dietetic student for the past couple of years, I had to relearn a lot of things that I thought I knew about nutrition. Therefore, now I know better and I can help you all with what I know!
I genuinely hope that this post somewhat help to open your eyes, especially if you had planned to try a new diet for the new year! There are so many more important resolutions that you can commit to for this year, that do not revolve around diets. You can decide to be more active, to work on your mental health, learning a new hobby and so much more. Remember that you don’t need a diet to tell you how amazing you are!
Wishing you all the best for 2021!
