Nutrition myths are taking over our lives more and more everyday. I believe that we all have heard something before about nutrition and did not know wether we should believe it or not. This the case with a lot of informations that we hear today in our society. So I thought that it would be fun to talk about some of the 5 most common nutrition myths that I hear people talk about VERY often. Let’s get into it.
1. Carbs make you gain weight.
I think this might be one of the most common nutrition myth that I hear. The truth is, ANY food can make you gain weight if you consume too much of it. Carbohydrates (carbs) are one of the nutrients which our body needs in big amount. Carbohydrates are also our main source of energy; therefore, we cannot eliminate it from our diets. Also, almost every foods that we consume contain carbohydrates which makes it impossible to eliminate it from our diets.
2. Vegan products are healthier.
Another common nutrition myth is when people think that vegan products are healthier or better for your health. Vegan products often lacks essential nutrients such as Vit B12 and Vit D3. This means that, one is not getting all the nutrients needed unless they are taking supplements. People often think that they will loose weight by consuming vegan products. Veganism is not a weight loss strategy. Therefore, if you are going vegan just to loose weight. Please don’t.

3. Eggs are bad for you.
Several years ago, it was thought that eating eggs will put you at risk for heart diseases because of its high levels of cholesterol. Hence a lot of people believe that eggs are unhealthy. Scientists never find a link between eggs and heart attacks/stroke. Eggs are very nutritious; they contain all the vitamin Bs and are a great source of protein.
4. Low-Fats, Low-Carbs are better for you.
Nope. Anything with “Low” in front of them is just a marketing strategy. Low carbs or low fats DO NOT mean that the products are healthier. The diet industry makes you think that you should not be consuming a lot of carbs or a lot fats because they are “bad” for you. Usually, those products are very high in added sodium or added sugars which can cause the body more harm. Also, if you check the ingredient lists of those products, you will notice that they are very long and they have ingredients that you’ve never heard of before. Therefore, do your best to avoid those products with very long ingredient lists.
5. Gluten-Free products are healthier.
This nutrition myth is very popular among the Instagram self-made “nutritionists”; It’s all part of diet culture. Just because a product is gluten-free does not mean that it is healthier. Gluten-free (GF) products are for people who have gluten sensitivity and celiac disease. Gluten is actually a protein found in wheat products and other grains. Therefore, eating GF products when you are not allergic or don’t have celiac disease might do you more harm than good because you are missing on nutrients.
